Improve your writing this semester

by Barbie in Writing

With another semester underway, it’s time for college students to get back into the habit of writing. After a carefree summer, hitting the books and putting pen to paper might be easier said than done. Here are some tips to help you get back in the writing habit:

Embrace pre-writing.

Take the time to research, brainstorm, and develop an outline before putting pen to paper. Writing a paper will be easier if you establish a coherent structure first.

Brush up on your style.

Find out what style guide your professors expect you to follow, and familiarize yourself with the basics. The Chicago Manual of Style offers a great Q&A section on its website.

You might be overwhelmed by your required readings for this semester, but reading is a great way to improve your writing. You will broaden your vocabulary and expose yourself to a variety of writing styles. Pick up the newspaper, subscribe to your favorite magazine, or search for interesting articles on the Internet.
