Further or farther?

by Barbie in Grammar

Further and farther are often used interchangeably, but each word has a specific purpose. Luckily, the rule is simple to remember:

  • Use farther for physical distance: I live farther away from the beach than he does.
  • Use further for metaphorical distance: Today’s rainfall further worsened the floods.

Further relates more to time, degree, or quantity and can even be used as a transition meaning “In addition.” Stick with farther for physical distance only.
