There must be something about this time of year because we’ve been inundated with resumes to edit. Perhaps the summer break inspires people to freshen their resumes or hunt for new jobs. Here are a few tips we have for resume writers:

Cater your objective to the job you’re seeking. Look at the job description and highlight keywords in the description. Incorporate those into your objective so that your relevant experience stands out to the hiring manager.

Use those same keywords throughout your resume when you can. The hiring manager isn’t going to spend a lot of time reading your resume, so you want keywords that relate to the position to jump out at him.

Show, don’t tell. Give specific examples about how you accomplished tasks or achieved goals. Don’t just say that you provided customer service. Tell us how you provided customer service.

Use the format that’s right for you. For most people, a chronological resume is best. But, if you have gaps in employment or do contract/freelance work, a functional resume might be better. Weigh the pros and cons of each resume style.

In today’s competitive job market, having a strong resume is more important than ever. Here are three easy ways to make your resume more marketable to potential employers:

3) Choose your verbs wisely.

The use of strong action verbs offers potential employers an instant understanding of your skills. Verbs like managed, designed, wrote, and created vividly illustrate your job tasks and allow potential employers to envision your past tasks and how those tasks fit within their organization.

2) Add numbers.

Figures help quantify your accomplishments. Read through your resume, and circle any job task that can be quantified. If you managed multiple accounts to boost sales, specify how many accounts you managed and how sales improved.

3) Maximize white space.

Ensure that your resume offers a good balance between text and white space. Use bulleted lists, headings, or bold text to draw the reader’s eye to important items, and avoid paragraph-style blocks of text.
