ACADEMIC AND CONTENT WRITING TIPS AND TRICKS

APA Figures & Tables: A 7th Edition Refresher

You’re probably writing your academic manuscripts in APA 7th edition at this point—or, at least, I hope you are. I’m still bouncing back and forth between the 6th and 7th editions of the style guide, depending on the client.

What I’ve found is that I greatly prefer APA 7th edition. While it always takes some time to adjust to new guidelines, I quickly discovered that the new edition is much more streamlined and succinct, making it easier to use.

Figure and table captions are just one example of a smart update. Rather than positioning figure captions below the figure and table captions above the table, as required in the 6th edition, they’re now the same.

If you are adding figures and tables to your manuscript formatted in APA 7th edition, here’s the simple format to use. Position all captions above the figure or table in the following format:

Table/Figure #

Table/Figure Title

It’s that simple. Read more about how to incorporate tables and figures into your manuscript in this APA Style table and figure guide.
