ACADEMIC AND CONTENT WRITING TIPS AND TRICKS

4 Tips for Successful Writing This Semester

Ready for Spring 2021?

Before you let those syllabi get you down, consider the keys to successfully writing this semester. Whether you have short academic manuscripts, literature reviews, or the first draft of your dissertation on the schedule, you want to excel this semester.

Keep these tips in mind as you prepare for writing this semester.

1. Study Your Style Guide

I know, I know. It’s not the most interesting read for the average student. While I love a good style guide, I know I’m in the minority on this one.

But, brushing up on your style guide will pay off once you dive into writing. A quick review of a style guide you’ve used before or a cover-to-cover read of a new style guide early in the semester can save you the hassle of trying to learn proper style while writing and researching. With your style guide knowledge fresh in your mind, you’ll save time when you sit down to write.

2. Conduct Your Research Early

Your syllabus lists when the paper is due, but it doesn’t tell you when to start your research. That decision falls on you. Research early to ensure you have ample time to write. If you procrastinate, your research won’t be thorough enough to draft a well-developed paper. Thorough research, on the other hand, makes writing easier, so it’s time well spent.

3. Embrace Prewriting

It’s tempting to just dive in with that introduction and start writing, but your first draft will be smoother and more convincing if you spend some time prewriting. Brainstorming and outlining are key steps that help you plan your paper and organize your ideas, which will make writing easier.

4. Save Time for Revisions

Yep, they’re inevitable. And they’re important. Revisions are key to a successful paper. Working with an editor can help tackle many of those revisions, but even an edited paper will require your input for that final, polished touch. That extra effort might make a B paper an A paper, so your hard work will pay off.
