
With nearly ten years of writing and editing experience, Barbie Carpenter has worked with a variety of clients from a number of backgrounds, including journalism, defense, and academia. Barbie worked as a newspaper editor for two years, editing feature pages for 90 percent of the nation’s top 100 newspapers. During this time, she also wrote a weekly syndicated column, “It’s a Woman’s World,” that was distributed to 1,200 newspapers across the country.
Barbie has also served as a technical writer and editor since 2005, working with a number of defense clients, including the United States Navy, United States Marine Corps, and Canadian Department of National Defense. In this role, she writes and edits computer-based courseware and training materials, focusing on developing grammatically correct, technically accurate, and instructionally sound documentation.
As a freelance editor, Barbie has worked with many graduate students, editing theses, dissertations, conference proposals, and academic journal articles. She has helped job seekers build impressive resumes and cover letters and students craft strong personal statements for their graduate school applications. Barbie also has ongoing relationships with several small business owners and university departments, editing quarterly publications, marketing materials, and website text for these clients. She has also edited a number of fiction and non-fiction books.
Barbie is proficient in all major style guides, including American Psychological Association (APA) Style, Associated Press (AP) Style, the Chicago Manual of Style, Modern Language Association (MLA) Style, and the Gregg Reference Manual.
Barbie earned a bachelor of science in journalism from the University of Florida in 2003 and a graduate certificate in professional writing from the University of Central Florida in 2009.
